Originally, hubcaps came small in size designed to cover only the grease bearing of the wheel. They are snapped onto bulges of the wheels, and need a large slotted screwdriver when you want to change them. Hubcaps were once made of chrome-plated steel and but due to the evolution of automotive technology, different materials and concepts were utilized.

Hubcaps started with the rest of the wheel being covered with wood or many fitted metal parts followed by painting them with the same color as of the car’s body to give a monochromatic effect. Another development was the availability of a chrome plated trim ring offered as an option for higher costing cars. Then finally the emergence of wheel covers used to cover the entire wheel. The wheel covers are used on specialty wheels of magnesium or aluminum alloys and that plastic molded covers are now being sold.
