Mercedes Benz Head Gasket
White smoke coming out of the tailpipe; engine oil contaminated with water; coolant
contaminated with oil; engine misses while running—all of these are but a few
of the symptoms of either of two things: a blown head gasket or a warped/cracked
cylinder head. But whichever of these parts is causing the problem, it is important
that that part be checked and replaced immediately—that is, before it causes a
lot more trouble. Of course you would wish that it is the head gasket that is
in trouble, for this component is more affordable than the cylinder head.
But what is a head gasket? A head gasket is a gasket that seals the cylinder
head(s) to the cylinder block, thus it is also often called the cylinder head
gasket. The head gasket also enhances the sealing between the cylinder head(s)
and the exhaust manifold or header.

Problems in the head gasket (especially head gasket leaks) may be caused by a
blown head gasket or a warped or damaged cylinder head. A blown head gasket is
often the result of a bad gasket replacement job. In such cases, a break is formed
between the opening for the cylinder and an opening for the coolant. Cylinder
head warping, on the other hand, is often caused by overheating. This is especially
true for aluminum cylinder heads lying over a cast-iron cylinder block, because
the much faster thermal expansion of aluminum would cause it to warp over the
cast-iron cylinder block. In either case, coolant would tend to leak into the
combustion chamber, causing significant coolant loss and the exit of white smoke
in the exhaust.
Mercedes Benz vehicles are equipped with tough and rigid Mercedes Benz head gaskets.
Engine overheating, however, can easily spoil the performance of these components.
So if you suspect that the Mercedes Benz head gasket that your vehicle is equipped
with is already damaged, immediately ask a qualified service technician to give
the component a check. If it is indeed the problem, replace it immediately with
a new one, although with much care so as not to blow the replacement Mercedes
Benz head gasket.
