Toyota Harmonic Balancer
The engine system is one of the most vital systems integrated in every Toyota
vehicle. The main purpose of this is to convert gasoline into motion so that your
vehicle can move and the easiest way to create motion from gasoline is to burn
the gasoline inside an engine. The engine system is composed of various parts
which include the intake valve/rocker arm and spring, valve cover, intake port,
head, coolant, engine block, oil pan, oil sump, camshaft, exhaust valve/rocker
arm and spring, spark plug, exhaust port, piston, connecting rod, rod bearing,
and crankshaft. All of these parts have functions in order for the entire engine
system to operate normally. And any defect or damage on one of these parts like
the crankshaft will certainly affect its overall operation.
The crankshaft is the part of the engine that converts the linear motion of the
pistons into rotational motion since the Toyota vehicle’s wheels motion is also
rotational. It turns the piston’s up and down motion into circular motion. And
just like any other engine parts, the crankshaft is likely to fail after some
time especially if your vehicle keeps on experiencing harmonic vibration which
is caused by the power transmitted to the crankshaft by the engine. That is why
it is necessary to have a Toyota harmonic balancer.
The Toyota harmonic balancer is designed to reduce harmonic or torsional vibrations
produced in the engine’s crankshaft. It is sometimes called the crank pulley damper
or vibration damper. It is usually composed of three parts which include an inner
steel ring that bolts to the crankshaft, an outer steel ring with grooves for
the belt, and in between these two rings is the actual damper, which may be a
rubber disk, spring loaded friction discs, or both. This rubber disc between the
balancer's two steel rings is the one twisted instead of the crankshaft during
the twisting motion created by the transfer of power from the engine to the crankshaft
itself. This way the crankshaft can operate calmly and reduce the vibration.
