Volvo exhaust manifold is the passage of
exhaust gasses produced by Volvo’s engine towards the exhaust system.
If it is cracked or loosely connected, the harmful elements present in
the exhaust gases such as sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide and other
hydrocarbons will leak and get mixed with the atmosphere. On the other
hand, conditioned Volvo exhaust manifold will make sure that these
components are directed to the catalytic converter and other necessary
ports of the exhaust system in order to get strained, and so less
harmful exhaust gases shall be emitted into the air.
There are Volvo units that feature two exhaust manifolds, while
some only have one. This basically depends on the engine configuration
equipped in a particular Volvo model. Usually, two exhaust manifolds
are endowed to contemporary models, since these are the ones that carry
V-type arrangement of cylinders featured by V6 and V8 engines. Older
Volvo units which possess in-line arranged cylinders require only one
exhaust manifold.
An exhaust manifold is tubular steel or cast iron connected to the
cylinder head of the engine and exhaust system, allowing engine waste
products to freely flow towards the catalysts, mufflers and exhaust
pipes. A sealant called exhaust manifold gasket ensures that it is
tightly connected, and so avoid exhaust leak. Sometimes, it also
include heat riser valve. Controlled by a temperature-sensitive spring,
this contraption helps divert hot exhaust gases towards the intake
manifold, which is placed just above the exhaust manifold through a
separate passage, so to help in better warm up and drivability.
Do you hear a ticking noise when step on the accelerator or smell
exhaust leak? These two are indications of a faulty exhaust manifold.
Nonetheless, such problem can be avoided. By simply doing periodic
check up, the owner would learn if there is any sign of defect. If in
case, you have no idea with how to determine auto problems, at least
make it a point to bring the vehicle to a professional machinist
regularly. In such way, not only will the exhaust system be maintained
in good condition, trouble with other vital parts too would be detected
earlier, and then repaired or replaced as necessary.
