Toyota Catalytic Converters

A catalyst and a converter, these are the major purposes of
Toyota catalytic converters. With the latest innovations in technology more and more cars are produced to
cope with the changes in lifestyle of the modern generation. Cars have become
an important part of man’s daily living yet together with the skyrocketing number
of cars produced is also the increase in air pollution which can degrade man’s
health and the world he is living in. To minimize or to further eliminate these
problems, the government of every city, states and country implemented laws and
policies that govern the effects of cars in the environment.
Car companies and makers including Toyota made enhancements in their car’s system
specifically on the vehicle’s power trains and fuel systems. They equipped their
cars with new gadgets to reduce the amount of harmful exhaust emitted in the air.
One of which is the simple yet powerful Toyota catalytic converter. Cars produced
in the 1970s use car catalytic converter. There are other methods used to take
control of the harmful gases produced during combustion process. Some of which
are containment systems for evaporative emission, exhaust gas re-circulation and
on board engine management systems. The most effective however is a catalytic
converter.

Nitrogen gas, carbon dioxide and water vapor are the natural end products of
combustion but since there are defects in combustion, harmful emissions are also
produced. Carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, Nitrogen Oxides and other Volatile Organic
compounds are just a few. Carbon monoxide or CO is a colorless and odorless gas
but it is the topmost culprit in propagating harmful pollution in the air that
man takes in. Hydrocarbons are end products of unburned fuel. As it evaporates
in the air and is exposed into the rays of the sun, a reaction happens which produce
oxidants that fuse with oxides of nitrogen present in the atmosphere. The combination
produces ground level ozone or smog that can cause detrimental health effects.
Nitrogen oxides are also a main component of smog and acid rain which can cause
human membrane irritation.
The catalysts inside a Toyota catalytic converter are made up of platinum, rhodium
and palladium. It is used as coating on the surface of the converters which usually
come in honeycomb ceramic structures. Catalytic converter work through a chemical
reaction by reducing the activation energy required to produce harmful compounds
thereby it is converted into harmless gases. Reduction catalyst and oxidation
catalyst are the important catalysts making up modern high flow catalytic converters
like Toyota.
