BMW Billet Grille
Have you ever noticed the decorative grate of metal or plastic in at the front
of your BMW between the headlight assemblies? That decorative element is called
the grille and it actually serves a threefold function. First, the grille allows
air to flow into the vehicle’s radiator, thus helping it cool the vehicle’s engine
compartment. But while doing so, the grille would also prevent harmful elements
from entering the engine bay, thus protecting the engine and its parts from various
damages. Lastly, the grille also serves as a distinctive styling component for
vehicles and almost often used as the primary identifier of certain vehicle brands.
Focusing on the third function, you will notice that it is not exactly the grille
that gives the front fascia of the vehicle a distinctive style. Rather, it is
the decorative grating covering its opening that gives it a stylish appearance.
This metal or plastic grating is called the grille insert and for many years,
replacing the stock grille insert with a custom unit has been a popular way of
customizing the appearance of a vehicle’s front fascia. There are many types of
custom grille available in the market today and one of the most popular types
that you can install on your BMW is the BMW billet grille.
A billet grille is a custom grille insert that can be installed over the existing
grille insert or completely replace it. Billet grille took its name from the word
billet, referring to those components that are cut into shape from a solid piece
of material rather than forged or cast from small pieces of the same material.
Hence, billet grilles are often tougher than their forged and cast counterparts.
They also tend to look more stylish because of the technology used to manufacture
these accessories.
BMW vehicle owners have two options in case they want to replace the original
insert of their vehicle with a BMW billet grille. For easier installation, one
may opt for a bolt-over billet grille which would readily snap over the existing
grille inserts using hidden bolts, brackets and clamps. For a more seamless integration
with the vehicle’s grille, one may go for a replacement billet grille, although
this would require more installation time and effort.
