Chevy Alternator

For so many reasons, the alternators have replaced generators in motor vehicles. Some of the reasons include the following: voltage can be more correctly controlled with solid state regulators, output current can be generated at lower rpm, alternator cost less to assemble and they require less maintenance. The alternator’s basic function in automobiles is to produce direct current for recharging the battery and for powering the vehicle’s electrical loads especially when the engine is running. Hence, the alternator is imperative in the performance of the powertrain as well as the vehicle’s electrical parts.

The alternator is made up of a spinning set of electrical windings known as rotor, a stationary set of windings called a stator, a pulley, a set of brushes and a rectifier assembly. The brushes in the alternator are used to maintain electrical contact with the rotor and a pulley. Except for the pulley, all the components of the alternator are enclosed in aluminum housing. Modern vehicle alternators feature compact, electronic voltage regulators that may be positioned inside the alternator. The voltage regulator function may also be managed by the automobile’s powertrain control module or PCM.

Chevy Alternator

Your Chevy alternator is one of the imperative components that deserve proper care and maintenance. It is because a problem in your alternator can lead to poor or defective operation in the accessories and parts that require electricity, most especially the lights, discharged vehicle battery, inconsistent engine operation, frequent bulb replacement, recurrent voltage regulator failures, or may cause dashboard warning light to illuminate. It is true that your Chevrolet vehicle is made up of durable and top quality auto parts including Chevy alternator. But no matter how tough they are, they will eventually wear out in the long run especially if they aren’t maintained properly.

There are some maintenance tips which you can apply to keep your Chevy alternator in good working condition. First, make sure to check the drive belt tension at every oil change. Having a loose belt can lessen alternator output and run down your Chevy’s battery. Prior to your travel, it is advisable to have your vehicle’s charging system tested as part of your complete starting, charging and battery test. And if you found out that there is a problem with your Chevy alternator, bring your car to a qualified service technician and have your vehicle’s charging system inspected.
